 Body shapes

If You’re an Hourglass Shape:

  • Most styles will suit you and most women are envious.  You are spoilt for choice.
  • Celebrate your curves with a ‘mermaid’ or ‘trumpet’ shaped gown.
  • On the down side, because you will look good in so many styles, the decision making becomes much harder but remember to stay true to your style.

 If You’re Pear Shaped:

  • With your body type you should look out for a skirt that gradually flares out in an A formation to the floor (A-Line).
  • You want to emphasise the narrowness of the waist while floating away from the hips and thighs.
  • Stick to the sturdier fabrics that won’t cling to your body like duchess satin, taffeta, dupion or shantung.
  • A spaghetti-strap bodice or a V neckline will also showcase a more slender upper body.

If You’re Busty:

  • You should be looking for a dress with a scooped neckline that will emphasise your face and display your décolletage without showing too much cleavage.
  • If you’re wanting a strapless dress, avoid a neckline that goes straight across as it will make your bust appear even larger.
  • Rather, choose a sweetheart line or a slight dip.
  • Also avoid an organza or satin bodice (which has a sheen) or ruching as they will add extra volume to your bust.

If You’re Apple Shaped:

  • With your body type you should look for a dress that cinches in at the smallest point on the waistline, then flaring out into a gradual A shape.
  • Opt for texture like ruching or lace detailing which will camouflage and create a corset like effect.
  • Your best neckline is a deep V, it will draw eyes toward the vertical, not the horizontal.

If You’re Straight Lined:

  • You’ll want to create curves you may not have and try a sheath dress in a wispy charmeuse that’s cut on the bias.
  • Alternatively, you would look great in a ball gown that cinches in at your waist.
  • If you are small busted, try some ruching and create volume.

If you Have an Athletic Figure:

  • Good For You! A well-deserved body type.
  • You would do well with a gown that really accentuates the waist.
  • If you have broad shoulders, you can benefit from off the shoulder V-neck and cap-sleeve styles. The V-neck helps create the décolletage as the new focal point, and the cap-sleeve softens the shoulders.
  • Halter styles can also be a good choice, but they should complement the collar bone.

Different Bridal Gown Types:

  •  A-line or princess dress (creating an A shaped silhouette) is great if you carry your weight in the middle.
  • Ball gowns or “Meringue” style (fitted bodice with a big poufy skirt) are perfect for hiding large hips and thighs.
  • Empire gown (Raised waistline starting under the bust) flatters most body types but particularly small-breasted women.
  • Mermaid gowns (Contoured against the body then the gown flows out from around the knees) are the sexiest of the styles.  If you’re confident in your body, a mermaid dress can show off your curves.
  • Sheath or column dress (slim straight shape that follows close to the line of the body) perfect for brides with limited body flaws.  The long lines of a sheath gown can elongate the look of your body.  Therefore this type of dress can work well for short brides.
